Beyond Chatbots: AI That Actually Does Things

For the past few years, AI in development meant asking ChatGPT questions and copy-pasting code. Helpful, but limited. You were still the one doing the work.

Agentic AI is different. These aren't assistants waiting for instructions - they're autonomous agents that can plan, execute, and iterate on complex tasks with minimal human intervention.

I've been using agentic AI tools for the past few months. The productivity gains are real, but so are the learning curves and limitations. Let me share what I've actually experienced.

What Makes AI "Agentic"?

Traditional AI assistants are reactive. You ask, they answer. Agentic AI is proactive:

  • Goal-oriented: You define the objective, the agent figures out the steps
  • Tool-using: Agents can browse the web, run code, access files, call APIs
  • Self-correcting: When something fails, agents try different approaches
  • Multi-step reasoning: Complex tasks are broken into subtasks automatically
  • Memory: Agents remember context across long interactions

Think of it like the difference between a calculator and a spreadsheet that builds itself based on what you're trying to accomplish.

Real Agentic AI Tools I'm Using

Cursor with Agent Mode

This changed my workflow dramatically. Instead of asking for code snippets, I describe what I want built:

"Create an authentication system with email/password and Google OAuth, using NextAuth.js, with proper error handling and loading states."

The agent:

  1. Analyzes my existing codebase
  2. Creates necessary files
  3. Writes the implementation
  4. Updates related files (configs, types, etc.)
  5. Explains what it did and why

Is it perfect? No. Do I still review everything? Absolutely. But the time savings are massive.

GitHub Copilot Workspace

Point it at an issue, and it proposes a full implementation plan with code changes across multiple files. For well-defined bugs and features, it's remarkably effective.

Claude with Computer Use

Anthropic's computer use capability lets Claude literally operate your computer - clicking, typing, navigating. I've used it for:

  • Setting up development environments
  • Running through test scenarios
  • Automating repetitive configuration tasks

Custom Agents with LangChain/CrewAI

For specific workflows, I've built custom agents that:

  • Monitor repositories and summarize changes
  • Research technical topics and compile reports
  • Generate documentation from codebases
  • Run automated code reviews with specific criteria

What Agentic AI Does Well

1. Boilerplate and Setup

Project scaffolding, configuration files, standard implementations - agents crush these tasks. What took an hour now takes minutes.

2. Refactoring at Scale

"Update all API calls to use the new error handling pattern" - agents can make consistent changes across an entire codebase.

3. Research and Synthesis

Need to understand a new library? An agent can read documentation, find examples, and create a summary tailored to your use case.

4. Test Generation

Describe what you want tested, and agents generate comprehensive test suites. They often catch edge cases I'd miss.

5. Documentation

Agents can analyze code and produce accurate, well-structured documentation. They're tireless technical writers.

Where Agentic AI Still Struggles

1. Novel Architecture Decisions

Agents work best within established patterns. Ask them to design something truly new, and they'll default to common solutions that might not fit your needs.

2. Deep Debugging

For straightforward bugs, agents are helpful. For those mysterious issues that require deep system understanding? You're still on your own.

3. Business Context

Agents don't understand your users, your business constraints, or why certain technical debt exists. They optimize for code, not for your actual situation.

4. Security-Critical Code

I never fully trust agent-generated authentication, encryption, or security code without thorough review. The stakes are too high.

5. Knowing When to Stop

Agents can get stuck in loops, trying increasingly complex solutions when the simple answer was "this can't be done" or "ask the human."

How My Development Process Has Changed

Before Agentic AI

  1. Plan the feature
  2. Write code manually
  3. Debug and iterate
  4. Write tests
  5. Document

With Agentic AI

  1. Plan the feature (still me)
  2. Describe to agent, review output
  3. Guide agent through debugging
  4. Agent generates tests, I verify coverage
  5. Agent drafts docs, I refine

My role shifted from "person who writes code" to "person who directs and reviews code." It's a different skill set.

The Skills That Matter Now

Clear Communication

Agents are only as good as your instructions. Vague requests get vague results. Being precise about requirements is crucial.

Code Review Excellence

You need to catch what agents miss. Understanding code deeply enough to spot subtle issues is more important than ever.

System Thinking

Agents work at the code level. You need to think at the system level - how pieces fit together, what the tradeoffs are.

Knowing When NOT to Use Agents

Sometimes writing code yourself is faster. Recognizing these situations saves time and frustration.

Practical Tips for Getting Started

Start Small

Don't ask an agent to build your entire app. Start with well-defined, contained tasks. Build trust gradually.

Be Specific

Instead of: "Add user authentication"

Try: "Add email/password authentication using NextAuth.js with the credentials provider. Include a sign-up page at /signup, sign-in at /signin, and protect the /dashboard route. Use our existing Button and Input components from @/components/ui."

Provide Context

Tell agents about your tech stack, coding standards, and existing patterns. The more context, the better the output.

Iterate, Don't Restart

If the first output isn't right, guide the agent to fix it rather than starting over. Agents learn from corrections within a session.

Review Everything

Never ship agent-generated code without review. Trust but verify.

The Bigger Picture

Agentic AI isn't replacing developers. It's changing what developers do.

We're moving from craftspeople who build everything by hand to architects who design and oversee construction. Both roles are valuable. Both require skill. But they're different skills.

The developers who thrive will be those who:

  • Embrace agents as powerful tools
  • Develop strong review and oversight capabilities
  • Focus on the problems that still need human judgment
  • Stay curious about what's becoming possible

What's Coming Next

Based on the trajectory, I expect:

  • More autonomous agents: Less hand-holding required
  • Better collaboration: Multiple agents working together
  • Deeper integration: Agents embedded in every dev tool
  • Specialized agents: Experts in specific frameworks or domains

The pace of change is accelerating. What seems impressive today will be baseline tomorrow.

My Honest Assessment

Agentic AI has made me noticeably more productive. I ship faster. I handle more complex projects. I spend less time on boring tasks.

But it hasn't made me lazy. If anything, I think harder now - about requirements, about edge cases, about what I'm actually trying to build. The easy parts are automated. What's left is the hard stuff.

That's not a bad trade.

The future of software development isn't human vs AI. It's human with AI, building things neither could build alone.

And honestly? That future is already here. Time to embrace it.
